URUGUAYAN PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE (\u201cDNPI\u201d) AND MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY, ENERGY AND MINING (“MIEM”) ANALYZED URUGUAY\u00b4\u0301S PERFORMANCE IN WIPO\u00b4S WORLD INNOVATION INDEX 2025.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

MIEM-DNPI and Uruguay\u00b4s innovation program – Uruguay Innova – reflected on the Global Innovation Index 2025, presented by WIPO.<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n

Uruguay Innova, together with the National Directorate of Industrial Property (DNPI) of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held on October 17, 2025 the event Reflections in the Framework of the Global Innovation Index (\u201cGII\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

The presentation was introduced by the Assistant Director General of WIPO’s IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector, Marco Alem\u00e1n; and counted with the participation of several WIPO, MIEM, DNPI and Uruguay Innova officers and researchers.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”299684″]As to Uruguay’s R+D investment and performance, the following key figures were provided:<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Researchers: the figure was 902.43 FTEs (full-time equivalent) per million inhabitants in 2023, an increase of 2.51% compared to the previous year, which is equivalent to 56th place in this indicator.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gross expenditure on R+D: represented 0.63% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022, an increase of 0.01 percentage points compared to the previous year, which is equivalent to 57th place in this indicator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

R+D Carried out by companies: represented 0.29% of GDP in 2022, a decrease of 0.007 percentage points compared to the previous year, which is equivalent to 49th place in this indicator.<\/span><\/p>\n

R+D financed by companies: it represented 4.2% of total gross expenditure on R+D in 2021, the same value as the previous year, which is equivalent to 80th place in this indicator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MIEM-DNPI and Uruguay\u00b4s innovation program – Uruguay Innova – reflected on the Global Overall Uruguay’s performance in the GII 2025<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Uruguay ranks 47th among the 54 economies in the group of high-income countries, and 4th among the 21 economies in Latin America and the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MIEM-DNPI emphasized that Uruguay stands out for the stability it offers for doing business. The representatives of Uruguayan authorities also reflected and exchanged on the opportunities and challenges ahead, based on the Global Innovation Index, and their impact on the ongoing work for the formulation of a national strategy on innovation and intellectual property.<\/span><\/p>\n
